2nd Sussex Junior Circuit Event at Pavilion—8th Feb 2009 |

PEAKE PERFORMANCE
Sam Peake (Arundel) played in his first Sussex Table Tennis Circuit event recently at King’s Manor School, Shoreham and looked like he had spent his absence practising as he achieved a surprise victory in the morning Band B event and achieved mid-table respectability in the afternoon’s Band A. Beware his return if he has any more time off!
Peake pipped Tim Priddis (Steyning) to the gold medal, the latter being a specialist in picking up Band B silver medals. Harry Collins (East Grinstead) also had a good Band B day winning the afternoon competition after a third place morning showing. Brighton City TTC’s David Board also managed two top four finishes and his clubmate Henry Assisi took silver after lunch. Indeed the Assisi family must have TT in the genes, older brother Leo also impressing technically and mentally over the day in Band A against strong opponents.
King’s Manor, new home of the fast-growing Pavilion Table Tennis Club, was hosting its second Circuit of the season and the decision proved a good one as the venue attracted a bumper 100+ entry. This number included some of the best adult players in the county, giving an entertaining and educating perspective to the youngsters and parents there to witness to the shows of spin, pace and athleticism. Despite it being the seventh event of the season the Circuit series shows no sign of losing its momentum.
Not surprisingly Band A was dominated by the visiting adult stars. Adam Todd accounted for talented Polish player Andrej Lasota before smashing through Brighton City club colleague Harry McCarney in the morning final. Mark Scutts was top junior evidencing his growing maturity in responding to higher level challenges. Brighton City’s Band A dominance was completed after lunch with Tom Holtam winning out 11-9 in the deciding set of the final versus Horsham’s Steve Pound. Youngsters Henry Tester (North Mundham) and Leo Assisi achieved third and fourth respectively leaving a number of adults trailing.
A number of unfamiliar names occupied the medal positions in Band C. Littlehampton-based newcomer Tom Hall could have been forgiven for thinking by lunchtime that the Circuit was easy after confidently winning gold at first attempt; a few losses in the afternoon Band B event administered a dose of reality however. Southwater’s Joe Wright was delighted to finish runner-up to Hall. Harry Maynard (Horsham) confirmed his growing promise by winning the afternoon C title just in front of Hollingbury TTC’s Elliott Jeffrey.
Many new faces were also on show in Band D, including six-year old debutants Anish Padalkar and Tyler Shoare showing they can mix it with older kids despite only just seeing above the table level. Pavilion TTC youngster Kai Jonas made home advantage tell by winning morning gold, although it then cost him as he nipped home for some lunch and missed the medal presentation! Well done to Will Smith (Burgess Hill) for achieving morning silver. Another Pav boy, Ben Colyer, gave proof of his steady progress by taking the afternoon gold, just in front of friend Joe Morley.
